Smart Iot Data Platform for Energy Company Martin
Performance monitoring with Managed Stackable and IONOS
Initial Situation & Challenge
MARTIN GmbH, a leading provider of state-of-the-art waste-to-energy solutions, wanted to improve its services by utilizing loT data for plant-operation monitoring and customized data solutions. The existent on-premises data platform was no longer able to meet requirements for increased query load and flexibility. To unlock the potential of data-driven products, the company needed a versatile solution which also addressed concerns regarding data sovereignty.
The biggest challenge for MARTIN was to expand its data capabilities to effectively incorporate machine data. The company needed a solution which could not only handle higher query loads and deliver high performance in response, but also provide the flexibility to examine MARTIN technology as part of modern waste-to-energy solutions. Another key criterion was to achieve and ensure data sovereignty.
Solution
MARTIN GmbH had already decided to use the IONOS Cloud in combination with Managed Stackable as a data platform for this project. With the help of an IoT adoption framework developed by b.telligent, the required services and specifications for individual areas were evaluated and an IoT-platform solution was designed.
Each of the following six phases was passed through, and conclusions were drawn for the IoT platform and strategy:
- Business objectives: Together with MARTIN GmbH, the requirements and technical specifications for implementation of a combustion performance report were defined. A cloud architecture and implementation roadmap were created in this process.
- Connectivity: With the help of MQTT, data from waste-incineration plants are collected and transmitted to the cloud via an edge device.
- Edge computing: The edge device installed by MARTIN pre-processes data so that only relevant data points are passed on to the cloud.
- Cloud computing: With the help of Managed Stackable, the cloud infrastructure for the IoT data platform was provided in the IONOS Cloud. Management of the infrastructure and Kubernetes cluster was implemented using Terraform, ArgoCD and GitLab.
- Data analytics: Data harmonization, complex calculations and transformations were performed on the basis of Spark, execution at regular time intervals taking place with the help of Airflow. Power BI was used to generate a regular report on combustion performance.
- Business application: The data can now be viewed internally at MARTIN GmbH and made available to its customers. This provides new insights into the complex combustion process and serves as a basis for optimization.
The Stackable data platform offers a powerful solution for seamless registration and management of loT data, enabling advanced services such as plant monitoring and thus paving the way for smarter analytics solutions. With the help of b.telligent's know-how in the development of complex IoT data platforms, challenges in the processing and visualization of time-series data could be mastered and additional KPIs calculated.
The diagram below provides a summary of the services and tools for data processing and visualization. Interaction between the employed services covers the following areas:
- (Real-) time stream processing & monitoring
- Batch processing & reporting
- Self-service analytics
